How to increase your self-esteem
Self-esteem is one of life’s puzzles it seems.
For starters people don’t even seem to be able to accurately define what it is.
Secondly, it seems to almost be a taboo thing to have high-self esteem as it is often mistaken for arrogance.
And thirdly if you ask most people they’d probably tell you that their self-esteem isn’t great.
So what is self-esteem? How can we improve it and can it really be too high?
Let’s dive in.
What is self-esteem?
Self-esteem is how much worth someone places upon their life.
Esteem comes from the Latin aestimare which unsurprisingly means “to estimate”.
So it’s an estimate of oneself.
That was easy enough.
But isn’t that self-confidence?
No, no it is not.
Self-confidence is about having faith in one’s own abilities.
It is therefore possible and plausible to have self-confidence and yet low self-esteem, and I should know because I’ve been in that situation before.
A comedian can have absolute confidence in himself that he can go out and make an audience laugh but place no value on that skill or himself being able to do it.
Self-esteem and self-confidence can rise and fall hand-in-hand but they are by no means conjoined.

Low self-esteem
Sadly there are about 45,624 reasons why any given individual might have low self-esteem and I’m not really qualified to talk about the psychology behind any of it.
The reason for the low self-esteem that someone is experiencing may or may not be at all relevant to improving it.
Roughly speaking though no matter why you feel your “self” does not have much worth the ways in which to improve it are the same. We’ll get to that a bit later on.
But why is it a bad thing to have low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem and negative thoughts about oneself are best friends, they go everywhere together.
Having negative thoughts about yourself and your abilities can have a huge impact on your mental health and is one of the main causes of not only depression and anxiety but also unhealthy coping strategies such as drinking, drug use and smoking.
It can also form character traits such as shyness, insecurity, laziness, negativity, social ineptness and a bunch of other stuff that you’d probably not choose for yourself ideally.
But you don’t have to keep choosing that for yourself, you can choose to change.
We’ll get to that shortly.

High self-esteem
I’m more or less giving a surface level description of self-esteem so do not want to go too deep on this.
But there may be people reading this saying so you want us to have high self-esteem, isn’t that being a narcissist?
Short answer, no.
It’s possible that a narcissist could have high self-esteem but the opposite is much more likely.
Narcissists tend to lack the key things that people with high self-esteem do have, a) the ability to care about other people and b) not requiring validation from other people.
Narcissists also constantly seek to validate their perceived self-worth; people who simply have high self-esteem don’t need to
There is the potential that with high self-esteem that people can become overbearing or perhaps arrogant, sometimes even delving into higher risk activities.
On balance, and this is my opinion rather than fact, I would say the dangers of having high self-esteem are much lower than the dangers of low self-esteem.
Raising your self-esteem
Self-esteem fluctuates and although I’ve spoken about it being high or low it isn’t as if it is one or the other.
Self-esteem is a spectrum.
I’ve devised a daily 5-minute check-in which, with regular commitment to, should boost your self-esteem.
At the bottom of the page you can enter you email address and be sent the document you need immediately.
It isn’t particularly difficult to work out how to use it but I think a bit of background on each checkbox can’t do any harm.
The idea is to track what your self esteem is combined with your efforts to do things that should boost it.
My hope is that you’ll notice that on the days when it is higher you’ll find you’ve done more of the things that help you and it all becomes more habitual.
Using the checklist
Firstly, if you haven’t already then download it now by putting your email address below.
Once you’ve got it then you should complete this towards the end of the day.
Start by rating your self esteem from 1-10.
Where 1 is a rating that suggests you couldn’t feel more worthless.
10 is a score where you couldn’t feel better about yourself.
At the root of good self-esteem is being kind to yourself.
The way I like to refer to it is as treating yourself like your own best friend.
Have you done that today? If so tick the box.
Also write down something that you like about yourself.
It can be absolutely anything.
Comparisons between yourself and ANYONE else are truly unhelpful. Everyone else in the world has got their own shit going on and no-one really knows how anyone else feels.
Have you avoided making comparisons with other people today? Tick away if so.
Exercise is great for raising self-esteem.
Tick this box if you’ve done anything from a full HIIT class to being rushed off your feet all day. Getting your heart rate up releases feel-good endorphins – lap them up.
Did you laugh or smile at anything today?
What was it? Come on, what tickled you? Whether it was a meme, a joke or laughing at someone dropping an ice cream.
Sometimes we picture in our heads this perfect version of ourselves that we have to be at all times. This is a pretty unrealistic expectation given that we’re basically monkeys with anxiety.
Comparisons with a “perfect self” don’t help us at all.
Did you compare yourself with a perfect version of you? I sure hope not!
Messed up today? Yep, so did everyone else on earth. We’re not perfect
I hope you’ve forgiven yourself for anything you did “wrong”.
Making mistakes doesn’t make us awful people in anyway it just reminds us we’re human.
Do your best to learn from any mistake you make.
Anything which isn’t either “our thoughts” or “our actions” is outside of our control.
Putting undue attention or worry on things which are not in our control is not good for us mentally and not great for our self-esteem.
If you managed to not let things outside your control bother you then grab a tick for yourself.
You can read more about that here
Everyone needs “me time”. What did you do for yourself today?
This could be anything from taking some time to meditate to getting out and playing 5-a-side football with friends.
Being selfish for your own good is really important sometimes.
Self-esteem is often about recognising and celebrating the things we’re good at, when it’s so easy to concentrate on the opposite.
Which 3 things, no matter how small, are things that you are proud of today.
Showing up and trying our best, that’s at the root of being a great human being. Supporting others around us is a surefire way of feeling like we have more worth in this world.
Have you tried to be your best and most supportive self today?
Having a network of people around you to chat shit with, vent to or go to in troubling times is vital for a good sense of self.
Have you been keeping in good contact with people today?
Social media can be great fun but it can be a self-esteem minefield.
It’s so easy to be drawn into posting statuses or photos with the idea of getting a certain response, or some likes, or to get someone’s attention etc etc.
Good self-esteem comes from self-validation.
If your self-esteem is reliant on other people’s opinions then it is incredibly fragile.
There’s only one thing worse than posting something on social media and it not getting a response.
Posting something on social media and getting a response.
If you’ve not posted to get validation today then give yourself a golden tick, or just a regular one, whatever you like really.
It’s always good to feel like we’ve achieved something on a given day, so have a think about what you’d like to achieve tomorrow.
It can be as simple as “getting through the day” or if you’ve got something planned then put that down.
Repeat this daily and see how you get on!
The form itself is just for you, it doesn’t have to be shown to anyone.
And if it is easier for you then you don’t need to fill the form in at all.
You can just use the “notes” on your phone to keep a record of which things you did and didn’t do.
Either way it shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes out of your day.
